My favorite dress from Stella McCartney Spring 2012 is featured in their ad campaign. I'm not sure why I like it so much, the applique-like embroidery and the wavy hemline are quite appealing. But, it's an unusual dress because the print is actually very unflattering. If you take a look at Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow, and even Helena Christensen, the optical illusion it creates seems to thicken the waistline.

I came back from Taiwan earlier this week to an apartment filled with various flowers. Ming went to the flower market in my absence and picked different types of flowers and someone put them all together for him. A few did not make it into an arrangement, and so when I went into my kitchen there were a bunch of lone flower bouquets in my sink. Here is one of them. A really pretty flower that I don't know the name of, but looks like a cross between a daisy and a chrysanthemum.

Marks & Spencer is my favorite place to find pencil dresses. I also love the red doors in their fitting rooms. Today I was checking out the after holiday sales and found this black lace peplum dress. It reminds me of the figure-hugging sheer pieces that Stella McCartney showed for Fall 2011. It's on the pricey side, but lately I think I have more fun trying on stuff than actually buying.

Atelier Versace returns to the runway for Spring 2012

Things are still going well for Versace. The couture shows in Paris have wrapped up and this is my favorite look from all the spring shows. Sheer looks and lace are still in (see Elie Saab), but Versace brings the drama with sculpted gold inserts at the hip. I haven't been this excited about the label since their Goddess gowns way back in 2004, when I was in high school. That was also the last time that Atelier Versace was on the couture schedule too.

I sent a few letters out today and picked up new postage stamps too. Can't wait for another year of correspondence.

It's not that there's anything wrong with paper bookmarks, but I happen to use a leather one that I got ages ago on a family outing in D.C. You don't need to worry about accidentally folding or tearing leather. Besides, I got a lot of mileage from my leather bookmark this year, having read a total of 25 classic novels since April. I prefer a traditional leather bookmark over the kitschy shoe shape from Maison Martin Margiela by L'ATELIER d'exercices. But, at the end of the day, I would love any bookmark that had Maison Martin Margiela stamped on it.

This also becomes a handy whip. Woo-PAH. Woo-PAH.

Lesson of the Day: TWG Tea is not the same as Twinings

TWG Tea recently opened in IFC and yes, I thought those letters stood for Twinings, another tea company. TWG stands for The Wellness Group, and this tea company "is a luxury concept that incorporates an international distribution network to professionals, unique and original retail outlets and exquisite tea rooms". Now, Twinings is everywhere. They're the Walmart of teas, so I truly thought Twinings was trying to go for a high end look. My face is so red right now.

This new shop is a time transporter. As soon as you step in, you feel incredibly English, and that tea is the most important thing in the world. Loose leaf tea is sold in tins of various shapes, and there are hand sewn cotton tea bags if you prefer a single serving. A box of tea is a nice gift on its own, but there are beautiful samplers, and it's quite difficult to look away from a set of 5-6 mini tea tins. Some full-sized sets come with a metal scoop to add to that old world feel. There are also chocolate bars with original style wrapping and modern tin designs, such as White Christmas or White House Tea for white tea. The other side of the shop is a restaurant and the pastry counter is quite impressive as well.

My visit today was my first and last, because their prices really reflect what one of the co-founders describes as "couture" tea.

Well, it's suddenly winter and I need to replenish my beauty stash to avoid uncomfortable dry skin. My Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser (with Amazonian White Clay) lasted about five months. I went one month with a generic facial cleanser from my back up stash and immediately felt my face getting bumpier. Additionally, I also picked up a jar of The Body Shop Vitamin E Intense Moisturizer today. I took advantage of a deal to buy holiday gifts too. Finally, at the end of August I picked up Kiehl's French Rosewater to replace my former rosewater from Jacqueline Evans' naturopathic skin care line.

The New Stuff

Kiehl's Rosewater Facial Freshener-Toner - I actually use Kiehl's French Rosewater, which is available in stores here in Hong Kong, but I haven't been able to find it online. I can't imagine any difference between the two products so try this toner if you're a fan of rosewater. Kiehl's doesn't feel as "hearty" as Jacqueline Evans Rooibos Facial Toner, but it's equally refreshing and has a better price. I've been using this toner for a little over three months.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm - Recommended to me by Alina, it's not technically a moisturizer, but I use it as such. It's a radiance booster and claims to brighten and tighten your skin. I have to say it definitely firms up your skin and gives your face a more polished look. The balm is perfect for summer months when there's so much humidity, but I'll be putting this aside in favor of the thicker Vitamin E Intense Moisturizer for winter. After roughly four months of use, I feel like I just had a natural face lift. Thanks Alina!

There's still plenty of Versace x H&M

After lunch I wandered into H&M hoping to put together another A Double Take post. I found something more fascinating, which was a rack of the remnants of Versace x H&M. There are still pink fringe skirts, corsets and an odd dress here and there, plus a few pairs of shoes. The purple dress was actually one of my favorite looks. After trying one on, I see why there's so many left.

I love the long length, but the dress lacked proper lining and good support. If it had all those, the dress would have killed because the design is great. I didn't know there were eyelets, I assumed the detail was some sort of gold hardware. So if you're interested, the dress is 1290 HKD and there are plenty of sizes left.

Eyelets could not save this dress.

I was in Marks & Spencer this morning for some holiday shopping. They have a really great sweater selection for all budgets (from pure cashmere to...not). I spent close to an hour just examining the cardigan styles. I was also surprised by the variety of structured dresses, including my favorite style. This pencil dress in particular, has cap sleeves which may be unzipped for a sleeveless version. How considerate!

Marilyn Monroe's star power is as bright as ever. My Week with Marilyn opened this week in theaters, and accompanying the movie include Monroe-inspired editorial features and also the release of rare photos of the starlet herself. One of my favorite Marilyn Monroe movies is Niagara, and I like it solely for her amazing wardrobe. She wears silk-satin wrap blouses tucked into high-waisted pencil skirts, cropped blazers and slinky lingerie, all of which show off her voluptuous figure. Of course, there are the iconic looks to note:

Marilyn's character, Rose Loomis, rendezvouses with her lover at the base of the Falls in a brilliant yellow raincoat. Try a satin-shell trench coat by Emma Cook for your day-to-day.

I took one look at this Marchesa dress from Resort 2012 and couldn't stop thinking about Marilyn and her stunning pink, off-the-shoulder dress with a cutout at the midriff. Update the tapered dress with ruffled peplum.

In the final scenes, Marilyn's character attempts to escape to the other side of the Falls in a black suit dress. Pick a sleek blazer that buttons low. It may be a dark shade, but it's far from subtle.

Anatomy of a D&G Dress

Vintage HK is not the most comprehensive consignment store. I drop in maybe once or twice every couple of months and nothing really changes. So this purple D&G dress has been on the racks for at least two years. Earlier this year I found a gorgeous Prada pencil dress, which came past the knee and had a light tan shade. It was Italian size 42 and I was practically swimming in it, so I had to let it go. This D&G dress is a size 40, and although the lining is slightly snug, the dress itself fits extremely well. There is a placket on the interior to guard your back against cold zippers, as well as double tucks at the torso, which greatly accentuates the waist. It also comes to the knee!

This zipper works like butter.

I was worried about the material at first, because it is prone to crease with wear. But the dress looks quite different on the body and the creases actually improve the whole look, I have to say. I'm excited to debut it, I've never had a garment with such an exquisite fit before.

Style Bubble has posted images of a dress from the Mary Katrantzou and Topshop collaboration, a 14-piece line which will arrive in stores next February. This is as close to Katrantzou as a diffusion look can get, from the vivid prints to the teacup skirt. The dress is a fraction of what an original usually costs, but at roughly 560 USD, still quite steep for me.

Sarah Burton discusses how piecing and sewing together circles of fabric was quite "mathematical" and how chiffon was "massaged" to create the sea anemone look. Most noteworthy, she emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship during a time when people are looking to become photographers or designers. I'm trying not to get pulled into another H&M collaboration (when will they STOP?!). Thankfully, I will be nowhere near an H&M when Versace x H&M hits stores next month. But I have been checking out the previews and the full lookbook, and I like how Donatella pulled from the archives. It's not Versace unless you're covered in studs or big, almost vulgar, gold hardware. When I think Versace, I think of Elizabeth Hurley's stunning safety pin dress. Now why wasn't THAT dress remade for H&M?

Mary Katrantzou is known for her incredible prints and 3D embellishments, such as one of my favorite looks from her Fall 2011 collection - a skirt adorned all over with giant flower crystals, which Anna Dello Russo amazingly did not crush when she wore it to the Chanel show last season. For Spring 2012, Katrantzou used Swarovski crystals to make a completely crystallized look. Style has a video detailing the process used to turn a flower field print and tin cans into a stunning asymmetrical gown.

Fashion month has concluded! Here are my favorite looks from the second half of Paris Fashion Week.

Costume National

Costume National had the right mix of sportiness and femininity with their alluring sheer panels juxtaposed with bright color blocks. The hint of sculpted sleeves and knee-length hems are also a big plus.

Stella McCartney

The dresses that showed at the end of Stella McCartney had the most interesting scalloped, applique-like edges.

Chanel

I don't follow Chanel. I feel it's for older women who can wear Chanel more appropriately. Blake Lively as a brand ambassador was a misfire. However, the drop waist and boxy jackets and overall bubbly silhouette for their under the sea inspiration were quite youthful. I really liked the signature strand of pearls wrapped around the waist as well.

Alexander McQueen

As Chanel took us under the sea, Sarah Burton, too, references "oceanic life", but in minute extremity. For Spring 2012, we're taken to the deepest interior of shells, amidst the encrustation of barnacles and into exotic coral reefs. I loved the metallic and iridescent structured dresses and the golden harnesses wrapped around delicate gowns. Burton stayed true to Alexander McQueen, but I am ready to see some new silhouettes.

We're at the halfway point of Paris Fashion Week, with four more full days of shows left. What a long week! I rounded up my favorite looks so far. What I love about Paris is the impeccable craftsmanship as well as the creativity.

Balmain

Balmain really fell off the radar for a couple of seasons, but with new designer Olivier Rousteing at the helm, the label is focusing less on jeans and ripped tees. The structured mini dress paired with ankle boots is nothing new, but the heavy, almost encrusted, embroidery and gold embellishments stay true to the Balmain heritage.

Nina Ricci

Ladylike silhouettes prevailed at Nina Ricci Spring 2012. There were hints of lingerie, pillbox hats and pretty outerwear. I like the belted dresses with knee-length hems and the extra large clutches. So proper.

Maison Martin Margiela

Maison Martin Margiela really nailed the dry cleaners look for spring.

Lanvin

I was hooked by the first look, with the subtle shoulders and tapered hem. Lanvin Spring 2012 is simple and effortlessly luxurious. It's what women want!

Viktor & Rolf

Last fall they imitated paper. For spring, the duo behind Viktor & Rolf got crafty with giant hemming stitches. I like the whole crudeness of it, finishing edges and pinning ruffles haphazardly, yet everything still looks so streamlined.

Lanvin has partnered with Dessine l'espoir to support women in Africa living with HIV. Women in Swaziland have sewn and embroidered limited edition fabric dolls dressed in Lanvin Petite, which is the label's childrenswear collection. If you're a fan of Marc Jacobs Fall 2011, check out H&M for very similar edgy yet feminine pieces with all over polka dots. I found a button-down dress and various green and yellow ochre separates with black polka dots. There was also a sheer, polka dot sleeveless top with a peter pan collar, which looked really nice tucked into the pencil skirt.

On Valentine's Day I received a very pink package from my mom. One of the items inside was a box set of 3x5 notecards. They're so tiny, but 3x5 is the minimum size required to send something through post. I wrote to my family, and my sister enthusiastically responded that they look like Pride & Prejudice cards. The method of correspondence during Jane Austen time involved calling cards and letters of such size. I was also amused, while reading Vanity Fair, of couples living next door to each other, communicating through their servants with succinct written messages of "can I see you right now" and to wait for a response of "no, am unwell". I think I only want to write on 3x5 cards now.

Kiehl's Celebrates 160 Years

It's only after I've left New York that I suddenly have such an interest in Kiehl's products. And Ming used to live so close to the store near E14th Street! This year Kiehl's is celebrating its 160th anniversary in New York. They are unveiling a limited edition set, one of which includes their popular Calendula Toner. I'm not sure if the New York Heritage Collection will be available in Hong Kong. I popped into one of their stores last week for some rosewater. I recently finished Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray, and the details provided of toiletries and beauty routines during Regency London are so fascinating. Any flower can become facial toner. Well, I think I will check the stores here again in September, when the LE set is due to arrive. I am a sucker for packaging.

It's been awhile! I spent a little over three months on a book binge, reading mostly classics for the first time. I buy books full price and accumulate points to use for the pricier copies. Bookstores and books aren't too plentiful here, and I am ready to hit up Barnes & Noble as soon as I set foot back in the states at the end of the year. With the news of Borders going out of business, I suddenly have the urge to horde books. Each book is like a good friend.

So I haven't been knitting lately, and then last month I decided to finally get started on a project that I've been planning for awhile. I had to ask my aunt to buy a particular circular needle in the states and I picked up the yarn I needed in Taiwan. The pattern is from Rebecca 42 and features pleats, which is something I fancy.

You'd think after all these years of knitting, I can jump right back into a new project no problem. But the first piece is riddled with mistakes, mostly because I don't like increasing stitches with seed stitches and I dropped a stitch at the halfway point and didn't notice until I finished the piece. Basically, I chose to forge ahead instead of frogging. When the front and back are identical, I designate such a piece as the back. The practice piece.

Pardon my funky tan

My yarn substitute was red cotton that I double-stranded to get the correct gauge. Turns out, while the measurements are accurate, the yarn is too heavy and my sweater dress feels quite baggy. During the project I did feel I had too much material and that I was making a flag or a parachute. But, the finishing is flawless and my seaming is top notch. I really like the little Stockinette stitch border on the neckline and sleeves. And the pleats were fun to make. I wore it out yesterday to see a movie with friends. It provides the right warmth in a heavily air-conditioned theater.

There are some plum exhibits just flying under my radar. Le XVIII au gout du jour or A Taste of the 18th Century at Versailles is one of them. This special exhibit takes a look at the influence of 18th century fashion on today's runways. The exhibition features clothing and accessories from over 200 years ago, incorporated with couture and ready-to-wear by modern designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Yohji Yamamoto. The juxtaposition of old and new is inspiring, and not much has changed since the days of Marie Antoinette.

I was Mimi's +1 for a mani-pedi session at Perfect Touch Spa today. This is my first ever manicure and pedicure, so it was pretty exciting. Also, the last time I painted my nails was in middle school. We went for more summery hues for our toes. I was hoping for a more neon shade of yellow, but this pops just as nicely. The new tan helps. I feel like taking a Sharpie and writing CAUTION or DO NOT CROSS on the toe, it's the same color as crime scene tape!

Summer time makes me want to buy flip flops, but not just any ole flip flop. There is a random boutique in Soho with tons of Havaianas on display. I wanted a red pair, but apparently there is such a thing as proper fit even when it comes to rubber shoes. The 38-39 pair was deemed too big for me by the salesgirl, so I was directed to the 37-38 section. I chose a pretty pink pair. For flip flops, Havaianas sure feel high end. They sponsored New York Fashion Week, which is how I learned of them. Are $25 expensive for flip flops?

I store and file my Fashion Week goodies much better than my receipts and bills. It took me mere second to locate this key fob.

The Scent of Marie Antoinette

The House of Lubin has "resuscitated" Black Jade. It is a lost fragrance, a rich floral blend inspired by Marie Antoinette's private gardens in Versailles, and worn by the Queen herself. The story of the house and creation of the perfume is simply incroyable. The name is derived from the flask that the Queen used to carry the fragrance with her at all times. Black Jade will be unveiled at Aedes de Venustas in West Village, on Christopher Street, this weekend. It's one thing to use a likeness to sell your product, but this is the Queen's personal scent. You can smell like her!

I thought TokyoMilk was first and foremost a stationary and paper products brand. They actually focus on health and beauty, and their use of Marie Antoinette is just the cherry on top of a sparkly cake. The cards are so intricate and whimsical. I picked one up at Initial today, to send a birthday note to my mom.

I liken the Initial boutiques to Anthropologie, but slightly edgier.

Giorgio Armani drew references from Japanese culture for his fall 2011 couture collection. It was very sleek and modern. The highlight for me were the windshields of course. I am not a fan of strapless gowns, but those windshields really made up for it.

I haven’t ever paid much attention to my beauty routine. I’m not really sure I have one, but I do use certain products over and over again. Here is my list of the good stuff, as well as some recent new stuff. I do have one beauty tip, which is more of a shopping tip. I like to linger at the beauty section or around beauty products that I haven’t tried before. A salesgirl will start describing the benefits and apply all sorts of lotions and perfumes on me. I’ll stay silent. After a good amount of time, I’ll pick what I want. At the register, the salesgirl will include samples meant to be used in accompaniment with my purchase (for example, a sample jar of moisturizer to go with a purchase of facial toner). I live off these samples. It’s probably a common sales practice, but a sample of something I need is better than random samples, you know?

The Good Stuff

Mentholatum – This is the ultimate elixir. You can use it for any ailment. The recommended uses are for reliving cold symptoms and chapped skin, but let your imagination run wild. My mom showed me how to dab the ointment on the temples and forehead to relieve headaches. You can use it on any insect bite, especially mosquito bites. When my nose is dry from long flights, I apply a layer in each nostril. I’ve also used it as lip balm all my life. You can find Mentholatum everywhere, but the formula varies slightly depending on where you buy. Made in Japan is the best.

LUSH Honey I Washed The Kids Soap – I often wonder why the LUSH stores look so intriguing and it wasn’t until I read plainly on their site that people usually think they’re entering a deli do I now see how much LUSH likes to emphasize that. Large chalkboards list the soap ingredients, the bath bombs are arranged like pastries on stacked platters and white labels indicate the price per ounce of the bar soaps. Not to mention the fact that you can request certain cuts and everything is shrink wrapped to go. My favorite scent is the honey bar, it’s so sweet smelling. And the beeswax is a nice touch, although it doesn’t dissolve like soap and you always end up with a T-shaped bar. I started using the Honey I Washed The Kids Soap toward the end of last year and now frequently buy them as gifts for relatives. You’re welcome, relatives.

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm (with Vitamin E & Peppermint) – I’ve used other Burt’s Bees products before – the Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme is really rich and smells amazing – but their lip balm is one I’ve stuck with consistently. I like to go back and forth between using Mentholatum and Burt’s Bee Beeswax Lip Balm for my lips. It’s always one of the things I grab as I go out the door, especially in middle school and high school – keys, money and lip balm. I prefer the tube version and my sister likes the tin. I recently picked up the tin version. It’s such a hassle.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Intense Moisturizer – Maryland and New York winters are pretty harsh on my skin. During the summer I’ll use Olay with SPF, but Olay doesn’t have much oomph in the moisture department when it comes to the rest of the year. Just a little dab of the Vitamin E Intense Moisturizer is enough to keep my face from feeling and looking dry for 24 hours. I used to stock up on these when I was in the states, but the humidity is so incredible in Hong Kong that I often go months before picking up a new jar.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion (with Cooling Menthol) – My skin is quite sensitive and I’m not able to use just any typical body lotion. Aveeno is great in general for all skin types, but I like the Skin Relief formula for their menthol. The first time I used it, the cooling effect was intense. And it’s quite soothing after a hot shower. I treat it as medication, you don’t need to apply too much.

The New Stuff

Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser (with Amazonian White Clay) – I’ve been using this for about two weeks. My aunt is a fan of Kiehl’s and recommended it. It’s supposed to minimize pores and city living over time has really done its damage on my face. The cleanser also does an amazing job removing make up. This purchase coincided with a recent agreement between Ming and I, to put off new purchases of clothes and video games for the rest of the year. So subconsciously I must have thought, beauty products aren’t clothes, and changed my spending habits accordingly.

Jacqueline Evans Rooibos Facial Toner – I meant to pick up an accompanying facial toner at Kiehl’s, but the one I wanted wasn’t in stock. So here I am toner-less. And then in a day-long outing with Koon, who took me to his and his wife, Catrine’s, favorite shopping spots, one of which included the Barneys New York of Hong Kong, I succumbed to a glass bottled toner from a naturopathic skin care line based in Australia. It was the rosewater that did me in actually. I am crazy about rosewater - it’s my favorite flavor of gelato. I’ve been using the toner for a week and my after shower ritual has been heavenly.

Harper's BAZAAR has styled Smurfette with fall accessories by Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton. The animated designs are too cute, and so accurate.

Art is truly wonderful. A few years ago I worked a Temperley London sample sale and spending 12 hours in a showroom with racks of RTW will pretty much keep a label on your radar for a long time. I tuned into their next season and fell in love with look 2 from the Fall 2008 collection (below). I asked Ming to draw me wearing the dress. There's something about an illustration that will never go out of style.

I didn't know there was a name for the type of wedding photography that I prefer. How do you go about explaining to others that what you really want are wedding photos that involve getting yourself dirty? Apparently the trend started in early 2000, and such sessions usually take place after the ceremony where you can "rock your frock" and just have fun. You can forget about shoes and leave your hair undone. And honestly, you don't need the groom there. Popular places to TTD seem to be at beaches or in woods. Other novel ideas include a scrap yard or my current top of the list choice: oil fields. Yes, I really want a backdrop of oil pumps. Rocky shorelines also sound great, or even a ranch, as riding horses look popular as well. The concept is high fashion, and I guess that is where the allure is for me. Ah!

I meant to post this much earlier, but I got sidetracked by a few side projects. It's been nearly two weeks since the end of my Taiwan trip and I still haven't shared all the wonderful things that I brought back! Here are the highlights...

I'll begin with this large brass ring. It caught my eye for being out of place in a typical open market in Taiwan, where fine jewelry and stones are the usual fare. The seller was also an American, named Daniel, who spoke perfect Mandarin. He designs jewelry and produces them in Spain. The rose and skull adornments feel very Old World, although my very first impression was something along the lines of Alexander McQueen. While I was examining and trying on different rings, my dear aunt did the bargaining. Such skills I leave to the more adept.

Toward the end of the trip, I found a blue and white print blouse that screamed Rodarte. Well, more specifically, the Ming vase print dresses from Rodarte Spring 2011. You find these gems every now and then. I didn't pick up any, but there were quite a few pieces with the Marc Jacob summer stripes, also from spring 2011.

This nifty hair piece is essentially a rose attached to a long covered wire. You form a loop with the wire and put your hair through it. Then you roll it up and wrap the wire to make a low, messy bun. I need my hair to grow out a little longer, but otherwise it's really secure and the rose is a nice adornment without being too cute.

Finally, although not from Taiwan, along with the stash of necessities like foundation, vitamins and dental floss that my family sends over, my mom included pretty vintage buttons from a textile show in the states. The set of pink buttons look like candy.

This large, flat-bottomed tote came from a cute dollar store in Taiwan. There's velcro on the sides, to attach two more totes to serve as a set of three compartments. On one side you can recycle paper (glass and plastic are two separate totes). Or flip it around to the other side and you can organize your undergarments (same for blouses and shirts). Because the type of storage I use for separating my recycling is the same as what I also prefer for bras.

Wow, Hong Kong Records is a gold mine of extra little perks with purchase. I bought the deluxe edition and received a Born This Way folder. I've been excited about this record for awhile, I still remember when I heard my first Gaga song. It was Paparazzi and I heard it on the premiere of the second season of Gossip Girl. And Poker Face came along a few episodes later. I kept thinking how catchy it was and searched for awhile until I discovered Lady Gaga and the rest of her music. This was in September of 2008 and one month later she released her debut album.

I accumulated quite a few cute things from Taiwan. This is a macaron purse from PAUL bakery. I tried a giant vanilla macaron for dessert and it was so rich and sumptuous. It was also nearly $7 USD. The food was nice too. I ordered smoked salmon and capers over a baked potato cake. It also came with a whole baked provincial tomato. So there was a purse for each flavor, but they weren't actually for sale. You need to purchase a box of the regular-sized macarons to receive a free purse. Well, my aunt's friend's daughter happened to have one, in whatever flavor purple represents. And she gave it to me as a gift. So sweet!

According to the US site, it looks like PAUL bakery recently opened in D.C. Maybe they will also offer free macaron purses with purchase.

Ming and I were Angel’s +2 to the BNP Paribas Match Racing Series, which was held yesterday afternoon at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. We had to rally and make the most of Mother’s Day, you know, seeing as we were without our mothers.

Like a breeze.

The RHKYC is near Stanley Market, at Deep Water Bay. We had to search for a tiny pier where we called for a motorboat to take us to Middle Island, where the actual clubhouse is. And from there, we boarded another boat, which took us to the grand spectator boat. This is all very covert.

Seabiscuit did not win this race.

So the day was great. There was a nice wind and not too much sun. And we enjoyed the matches on the upper deck. Every time we get on a boat we talk about buying one to live on. But, as I read on a friend’s FB status: you don’t need a yacht, you just need a friend with one. At 5PM, we headed back to land and partook in a lot of carved ham.

I like watching each team's synchronized movements, which you get a better view of when they sail closer.

My mom's not like a regular mom. She's a cool mom.

Met Gala Favorites

The Met Ball is one of my most looked forward to events. This year the Costume Institute Gala celebrated the work of Alexander McQueen. Usually I’m in favor of no fuss glamour on the red carpet. It’s often still day time during arrivals at award shows, so let your hair down and put away the darks. But for New York, and for an evening ball, I prefer to see some more drama. Here I thought New York weather was still pretty cool, but judging from the photos of the gala, I guess it was rather humid. Unfortunately for many of the ladies, it was either the hair or the gown that wilted.

My favorite of the night goes to Christina Ricci. The train of her Zac Posen gown was magnificent enough, but the exaggerated detail at the waist, creating a corset look without a corset, was stunning. I thought it was something she’d totally wear for herself and very appropriate for a costume ball without being ridiculous.

I adore Ashley Olsen’s vintage Christian Dior gown. The classic black pumps, high slit and pulled back hair were the perfect complement to the outrageous puff sleeves. And I don’t even mind that she is wearing essentially a strapless dress.

I think there are only two photos of Karolina Kurkova from this whole event and neither of them incredibly flattering (UPDATE: more photos have been made available, thank goodness). She wore a Jean Paul Gaultier gown. Or rather, mullet gown with lace leggings. It works because of the interesting neckline and shoulder detail. It’s a risky juxtaposition, but the lace looked “fresh” and had a good amount of volume so I felt that it matched the black taffeta quite well.

I'm on BBC, watching live coverage of the royal wedding. It'll be another hour and a half until the actual ceremony, but the guests are slowly arriving. It's a quiet process, until I hear shouts and cheers. The Beckhams have filed into the Abbey.

1120 BST: "I pronounce that they be man and wife," says the Archbishop.

1113 BST: Dean of Westminster has started the ceremony.

1101 BST: Miss Middleton gets out of the car and we get a full view of the dress - which we now know was designed by Sarah Burton.

1020 BST: William gives another wave to the crowds outside the abbey as the bells ring out in celebration. In the doorway, he takes off his white gloves and hat - and quickly smoothes down his hair.

1001 BST: An hour to go until the bride walks down the aisle. Stick with us.

Victoria has pulled her hair back into a ponytail. She's wearing look 2 from her Fall 2011 line.

0922 BST: The Beckhams have arrived. Victoria is wearing a dark slash-neck dress from her own autumn-winter 2011 collection. She's also sporting a small circular hat perched on the front of her head. Gwyneth Paltrow is currently on a book tour, and last Thursday she signed copies of her new cookbook at Williams-Sonoma in Beverly Hills. I like her yellow Rachel Roy pencil dress, which is from Spring 2009. On closer inspection, the material is quite textured, and looks like hammered silk. I'm really gravitating toward this dress style, but so far I haven't been able to find anything with a hemline that doesn't hit above the knee.

Found this cute tape dispenser at Jusco, a Japanese department store, in Tai Koo today. It's Scotch, so you'll definitely be able to locate it at your local OfficeMax in the states. I thought it was rather on trend, because it isn't any regular heel, but a platform pump. Mine came packaged together with six extra rolls of free tape.

After seeing model Lindsey Wixson tweet her Jason Wu prom dress, I suddenly got nostalgic for my prom day. Or rather, my prom dress, which was a haphazard experimental project meant to capture the goddess trend that ruled the runways and red carpet that year. My mom and I had already made my Homecoming and Senior Banquet dresses. So I had to top it off with a self-made prom dress.

Friends let friends post unflattering photos of one another

We bought the gold fabric at G Street. I created a mood board covered with glossy pages of draped dresses. And then there was the pile of hand drawn pattern pieces that somehow had to come together and emulate the designer look in a few short days.

Cut to prom night and I was still getting stitched up as I was rushing out the door.

Then NYU and New York came along. It was late fall and one morning I opened an email from my family with several photos attached. They went shopping over the weekend and saw a familiar dress on display.

It was pretty much my prom dress (in its ideal form) – the gold color, ruched fabric, gathering at the hip and low-cut back, everything! Even after seven years, I’m still marveling.

I prefer this shoot much more compared to the Vogue one. There are many that don't like her prosthetics, but I would be thrilled if I could somehow have permanent pointy shoulders. I love shoulders! I bought her US and Japan Vogue covers. I think I might have to pick up this May issue as well!

I Basically Knitted a Sweatshirt

Knitting is quite adventurous. Here is an instance where the end result is vastly different from the original. Some of it is technical. Traditionally, sweater pieces are knit flat, but when the front and back of a sweater are worked the same, happy bells go off and I rewrite the pattern to work it with circular needles. Here, I worked everything – body, sleeve, collar – in the round.

Then there is the creative aspect, which kicks in when I run out of yarn. I eliminated the fold over, off the shoulder collar, and cast off the sweater in a tidy boatneck instead. The ribbed hem also turned out too tight for me to comfortably pull the sweater over my head. So I frogged bottom up, which is a terrible idea. But I managed it and cast off in a looser gauge.

You know, like the ones you bought at Kmart for gym class?

Simplicity is quite appealing. I can see why knitters prefer such sweaters, and I used to think there was nothing duller than working an entire project in Stockinette. But, going the bulky route helps! The sleeve hem is “raw” – there is no rib. The sweater feels like a cropped sweatshirt, more of a layering piece even. And I am reminded of study hall and university whenever I look at it.

The yarn, by the way, is Lion Brand Yarn Thick & Quick, which I brought with me to Hong Kong. I love when yarn is finally put to use!

I'm familiar with the kate spade book clutches. There are new "editions" each month (and it's been confirmed that Pride & Prejudice will be available in the fall). Their version, such as the I Married Adventure book clutch, features sharp graphics and a PVC cover. French designer Olympia Le-Tan crafts her book clutches out of felt and other textiles. Oh Cotton, You're Not So Bad

I’ve been trying to pace myself with projects so I don’t burn out too soon (or run through my yarn stash). While this Twinkle long cardigan vest is quite lengthy, I finished it much quicker than anticipated. Perhaps I ought to knit every other day from now on. This Twinkle pattern is from Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2011. I used Sirdar Pure Cotton 4 Ply.

The project begins with one strand for the lower half of the body, and a second strand is added for the remainder of the project. It creates a nice thick and thin texture. I thought the garter stitch band on each side was pretty interesting. After all the increases, it “becomes” the sleeve. The ribbed border was a hoot. Over 400 stitches had to be picked up, but the first time around I only picked up a little over 300. I attempted to forge on through, but you don’t want to be hasty in the finishing, especially having invested the time and effort. So I frogged and picked up the right amount of stitches. Afterwards I realized 100 missing stitches probably would have made the cardigan more cocoon-like.

I’m beginning to think I have some sort of ESP with my yarn purchases because lately I find I have the right color and quantity for the project I want to do (yes, I have already begun another one). Although I would like to be more adventurous when choosing colors, and I think neon yellow or a bright red will do the trick the next time I replenish my yarn stash.

A Double Take: Fleur de la Renta

I took a different direction with this one. After eyeing a floral applique tank dress in H&M all month, I decided it reminded me of Oscar de la Renta. Sometimes you get a feeling, a certain aesthetic that makes you go "this is so (insert designer)". For example, the recent plethora of boxy leather dresses and tees brings Chloe to mind. Lo and behold, Oscar de la Renta has such a dress for spring. By the way, Topshop also has a similar version.

I have to say I am not the biggest Elizabeth Taylor fan. When it comes to the golden age of Hollywood, my favorite leading lady is Marilyn Monroe (and my favorite leading man is Fred Astaire). The actress passed away yesterday, and I've been reading various moving tributes. NYMag compiles quite a bit of slideshows, including one of Taylor's fashion sense. She's incredibly gorgeous in this one, on the set of Giant in 1956. And I love old photographs. It makes me wonder, of the many digital pictures we take today, which ones will be remembered tomorrow.

I was so busy with Fashion Week shows that I didn’t knit for over a month. Sometimes a lengthy break is nice, and after all these years I always find the motivation to make myself another sweater! I usually like long layers, with hemlines hitting the hip or thigh, but I wanted to try something new. I went for a boxy, cropped silhouette with this welted pullover from Vogue Knitting Holiday 2010. The yarn is from Wuxi.

The ribbed effect is so flattering, although I had to block my pieces to “see” them. The body is a rectangle, knit in one piece from side to side, with a slit down the middle for the neck opening. After I cast off, I just needed to fold the piece in half and seam the sides. Even the sleeves were boxy. The weight of the yarn and the large slit created a really nice v-neck. To keep the piece from falling off the shoulders, an eyelet pattern was picked up and knit on the back neck edge. Finishing was interesting, because I never seamed two cast on edges together before and I had to alternate between knit and purl seams for the sleeves. The original was also knit in a brown shade, and I’m glad I had enough yarn to keep the rustic look, like neat rows in freshly plowed earth.

kate spade's New Website (and New Arrivals!)

kate spade re-launched their website with more content in addition to their e-commerce. There is a blog chock full of articles, interviews and recommended activities. Everything is punchy and pretty! Their designers really need to get into the wedding invitation business. I clicked through the newest arrivals and am amused by all the tropical themed product. I like the look of Stockinette stitch on the with a twist orange slice tote, but I'm not crazy about straw accessories or things that remind me of wicker. The pineapple coin purse, on the other hand, is too cute!

Elie Saab Fall 2011 Goes to Paris

Paris shows have wrapped up and that is it for the fall season! I've chosen Elie Saab as my favorite show of the day. The designer went for Parisian chic, but basic solids in ladylike silhouettes always works for me! And I like the hint of sculpted shoulders as well.

There are so many amazing details at Alexander McQueen. I can never be mad at tulle, and the white gowns were beautiful, but I really enjoyed the use of hardware, from the metal spikes on the shoes to what I'll call barrette hair. Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to zip down from a full, ruffled skirt to a pencil skirt? And Sarah Burton made strapless gowns look much more edgy with the studded harness. It's quite alluring, and you know how I feel about strapless gowns.

All for One at Viktor & Rolf Fall 2011

I like Viktor & Rolf's origami-like approach to tailoring. Clean lines, crisp and just impeccable. The designers were inspired by the Middle Ages and jousting knights for Fall 2011, and I suppose the red face paint reflects the war and bloodshed. But do you know what I see? Cupcake liners!

A Double Take: Snakes & Lanvin

I'm not sure why, but I really like hunting for design rip offs. I think it's because I don't mind spending a lot of time in a store. I thought I'd take a breather before I dive into the Paris shows and have some fun at H&M today. I love the H&Ms in Asia, the selection here is quite different from the states. For one thing, everything looks really familiar all the time. Usually it's subtle, but in the case of this python print gown, not so much! It's tricky, by the way, to get a picture of a whole gown in the fitting rooms.

I think I'm in the mood for sweet pastels today, especially after seeing the Academy Awards red carpet arrivals. Missoni has great knits each season, and I love their swirly chunkies for fall. Not a fan of the big on big and slouchy look though, but the all over floral print is really lovely.

Mary Katrantzou has such a fascinating approach to prints. Last season she adorned women as backdrops to a room. You can spot flooring, curtains, chandeliers and flower arrangements. Also, many skirts resembled lampshades in all their tasseled and beaded glory. To me it felt like seeing a highbrow version of Beauty and the Beast. For Fall 2011, the designer incorporates the woman into the room. The looks are very ornate and structured. I really adore the teacup skirts and the wallflower prints. So charming!

New Knits at Mark Fast Fall 2011

I'm a big fan of Mark Fast's body conscious knit dresses, but I love how he added more coziness this season with outerwear and longer lengths. He played with knit textures, creating dense ruffles, which gave the bottom of a knit gown (center) characteristics of a big woolly sheep.

No worries! I haven't forgotten about my budding stamp collection. I recently received several from my mom and came across a few more while cleaning. I decided to save time and scan directly from the envelope, as removing the stamp first then scanning produces pretty much the same result.

Michael Kors celebrated his 30th anniversary with signature monochrome looks, presented this season in a more relaxed fit and casual silhouette. Floor-length dresses are made fresh and youthful with sheer fabric and, in a few cases, a lot of leg. Slinky jumpsuits and chic pantsuits range from blush pink, plum and camel to sleek black and red. Sandals finished each look, adding to the sporty feel. But, throw on the thick gold cuffs and collars, and that’s where the all-American glamour shines through.

Tickled Pink at Tibi Fall 2011

The dusty shades at Tibi feel so comfy and modern, but what I really adore is the light pink popping out here and there. It’s mostly the knit caps, but there are armwarmers and even a dress. They go really well with grey jersey layers and the cabled sweater dress (left), and somehow make body conscious pieces look effortlessly casual. The knit caps also remind me of another pink bob currently on the newsstand:
